Legacy

To Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty, Music is the only way of life. He realized early on, how strong, lasting and universal, the impression music can create, in souls of humans, irrespective of any boundaries that may otherwise divide them. The language of “sur” is common among all cultures. Varied colors of emotions expressed through music, create a tremendous impact on the human soul. It even contributes to the building of one’s character and its philosophical perspective.

The concept of Shrutinanadan came as a realization that the innate musical nature in a student should be recognized early and the music teacher should be able to unleash the flow of it within the student, to make them realize their full musical potential, by living and breathing it, in every single aspect of their lives. He had a very scientific and structured approach towards changing the age old, traditionally free styled teaching, of this rather abstract subject. The name Shrutinandan is a very thought out expression of conjugation of the two very important aspects of musical sound – a sound that is beautiful – and therefore synonymous to good music. The name was conceived by Smt. Chandana Chakrabarty, our beloved Guruma.

“Shruti” means the auditory perception and “Nandan” is that what is aesthetically pleasing in nature. Thus the organization is dedicated in imbibing the very essence of creating and nurturing beautiful musical minds of aspiring musicians. Shortly after receiving the Kumar Gandharva National Award from the Govt. of Madhya Pradesh, Shri Budhhadeb Bhattacharya, the then Chief Minister of West Bengal, expressed his wish to felicitate Panditji with a land for building the institution. Panditji became absolutely determined to fulfill this dream, and was then supported by Shri Sushim Mukul Dutta, the then Chairman and Managing Director of Hindusthan Lever. With his magnanimous help, Panditji could realize this dream, and the beautiful building of Shrutinandan testifies to this reality. Also this context will remain unfinished if the name and contribution of Pandit Vijay Kumar Kichlu, former Executive Director of ITC Sangeet Research Academy is not mentioned. He personally supported Panditji throughout to realise this endeavor even when Panditji was a full-fledged Senior Guru Member and of ITC Sangeet Research Academy.

In fact, the building that stands today here at 70, Uday Shankar Sarani, Kolkata is actually an exact replica of the concept envisaged long ago by none other than Panditji himself.

To date Shrutinandan has produced more than fifty top quality young musicians that are performing at national level all over India and abroad.

There are few people on earth who prefer to shun the limelight in spite of their quite covetable attainments and excellence. Vidhushi Chandana Chakraborty is one of those few. Being herself an expert musician in her own right she can perform all the genres of Indian music. She stood First class First both in B.A. and M.A. degrees in music from Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata.

She has never felt the need to parade her distinction and qualification in public. Rather she devotes her life for her illustrious husband Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty to pursue his musical journey and musical mission. Kaushiki Chakraborty their daughter, who according to Late Bharat Ratna Pandit Bhimsen Joshi was sure to make her presence felt in Indian Vocal Music scenario of the 21st century and she was initially trained by her mother Chandana. Now Kaushiki is one of the busiest Lady Performing Musician. Late Geeta Bose, Chandanajee's mother learnt Dhrupad from maestro Late Uday Bhattacharya, grandson of Jodu Bhatt of Bhishnupur Charana Lately she took talim from Late Bimal Bhandari Biman Mukherjee, Jamini Ganguly, Meera Banerjee and Dr. Amiyaranjan Bandyopadhyay for almost last 30 years.

She is the Principal of Shrutinandan, the unique institution of its own kind for the children, along with her infinite patience and tolerance in working out an harmonious synthesis of the duties of a sagacious housewife and those of a motherly conscientious teacher of children. The 'scientific method' of Shrutinandan training system was first applied on children rightfully through her and she adorns the post of the principal since its inception. Her albums containing Hindi Bhajan and some Bengali numbers published from HMV, Sagarika and Indo Oxidental Symbiosis, have owned the acclaim of discerning listeners. Her duet singing with her husband Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty (especially Bhajan & other devotional songs) are always among those concerts for the listeners who always cherish even today. Chandana's talent and her expertise have been properly shaped and transformed in her daughter's music who is one or the busiest Classical Musicians of today's generation. Her son Shriman Ananjan, head of Shrutinandan Studio is equally gifted music composer and a nationally acclaimed sound designer in his early age of 23.

Shri Gautam Haldar, the famous National Awardee Film Maker made a documentary film on "GURUMA, Smt. Chandana Chakraborty", which was largely appreciated by all. She has extensively travelled USA, Canada, UK, France, Thailand, UAE and many other countries both as a performer and an accompanying musician with her husband Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty and daughter Kaushiki Chakrabarty. Her innumerous Press Releases in newspaprs like The Telegraph, The Statesman, Anandabazar, Aajkal, Pratidin etc. are loved by the listeners.
